Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Queensbridge School in B’ham is running a radically different curriculum for its Year 7 students. I’ve attached some information that Matt Alan has put together for other staff in school because it summarises all the information. [They are called ‘enterprises’ after Dorothy Heathcote’s reclaiming of the word in her Mantle of the Expert work – it has nothing to do with business education!]
Katie Durham, who runs the ‘Where is home?’ enterprise and who is also Head of Performing Arts at school, is leaving at Christmas. Her post was advertised in September but none of the applicants was appointed. Within school, it will be possible to cover her HoD responsibilities until July. However, her teaching commitment to Year 7 [13 hours per week over 5 days] requires a special mix of interest, experience and expertise. Queensbridge needs a teacher with a rich working knowledge of DiE together with the experience and/or enthusiasm to build a close relationship with a class over such an intensive time – the specialism more usually associated with secondary teachers combined with the best practice of a primary teacher.
Do you know of anyone who might be interested in this post for 2 terms or even longer? It might suit someone taking some time out for research or other commitments.
The timetable is organised so that the children begin every day working on the enterprise [Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday periods 1&2; Thursday periods 1-4; Friday periods 1-3]. Queensbridge knows that it’s unlikely that many people will be able to commit to this timetable; because of this, the school is ready to be very flexible. Al Lee, the Assistant Head responsible for Curriculum Innovation at school (and herself one of the enterprise teachers) would be happy to talk to people about how things might be managed. She can be contacted on 0121 464 5566 or alison.lee@queensbridge.bham.sch.uk
The school’s latest Ofsted was at the end of September. Feel free to read it. You’ll see that the school, against all the odds, is doing a brilliant job for its children. You’ll find it, together with the school prospectus, at www.queensbridge.bham.sch.uk
Best wishes
